Dr Alexander A. Hannenberg, MD
Dr. Hannenberg was the 2010 president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and served as its Chief Quality Officer. He is a founding trustee of the Lifebox Foundation US, an organization focused on improving the safety of surgery and anesthesia globally and has led Lifebox safety programs in Central America. He is senior research scientist at Ariadne Labs, a health systems innovation center at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and Brigham & Women’s Hospital where he works on surgical safety programs. He previously chaired the national Council on Surgical and Perioperative Safety, a multi-professional consortium. He is a co-founder of ORDxRx, a multidisciplinary surgical safety consultancy. Dr. Hannenberg practiced clinical anesthesiology for 35 years, mostly at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in suburban Boston. He has been recognized for his work with the Distinguished Service Award of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and Honorary Membership in the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland.
Dr Aalok V. Argarwala, MD, MBA
Dr. Agarwala is Associate Director of Quality and Safety and Division Chief for General Surgery Anesthesia at the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Agarwala maintains oversight of departmental quality improvement initiatives, internal and external quality reporting measures, and development and design of new metrics and measurement tools. He has led multiple quality improvement projects, including improvement of intraoperative and ICU-OR handoffs, the implementation of emergency crisis manuals into the operating rooms, and improvement in pre-operative and post-operative anesthesia evaluation. His academic pursuits are centered on improvement of perioperative quality and safety, with a focus on the use of cognitive aids and structured processes to reduce errors and improve care. Dr. Agarwala serves on various national committees and has published and presented at regional and national conferences on the topics of emergency manuals, handoffs, and enhanced recovery. He received his B.S. and M.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his M.B.A. from the Anderson School of Management at UCLA. His clinical training includes an internship in Internal Medicine at New York University Medical Center, and residency in Anesthesia and Critical Care at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
